Defining the Sonoma Coast

There are many rigorous challenges of growing fruit in this dramatically cold environment on the far western reaches of Sonoma County, but they are well worth the risk. We rise to the challenges of the Sonoma Coast to produce wines with fully ripened fruit at lower brix, mature flavors, and tannins, that are balanced by a high-acid profile.

All Sonoma Coast vineyards share similar traits beyond the cool, maritime-influenced climate, including thin, rocky, shallow soil composed of sand and clay with little organic material. The vineyards are sustainably farmed and planted utilizing high-density spacing to stress the vines and ensure development of concentrated flavors.

Our Vineyard Partnerships

The true Sonoma Coast is mostly populated by adventurous growers with only tiny parcels of land who share a passion and philosophy with us to make wines that have the potential to be among the best in the world. When our founders established SCV, they sought out these existing, young vineyards and forged long-term partnerships with the owners that continue to this day.

The original four-acre Freestone View Block was planted in 1999. They arranged the Pinot Noir Dijon clones using 4 feet by 4 feet spacing. The Alessio block, one acre of Pinot Noir on the east end of the property, was planted in 2005. In Spring 2007, two additional blocks were planted to Pinot Noir: Salmon Creek (3.4 acres) and the Bodega Ridge (4.2 acres). The southern facing property is one mile west of Freestone and a mere 4.5 miles from the Pacific Ocean.

Sonoma Coast Vineyard Sourcing

From long term relationships to unique, limited available sourcing, our vineyard sites showcase the very best of the Sonoma Coast AVA. Today, SCV works closely with this small group of ambitious (some call them crazy) growers in partnership efforts, including:

Sangiacomo, NightWing, Petersen, Koos, Bella, Dunbar, Dutton
